About Me

Dr. Travis E. Grotz is a surgical oncologist and Associate Professor of Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His practice centres on minimally invasive approaches to gastrointestinal malignancies, with particular expertise in cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) — the principal surgical approach to malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. At Mayo Clinic he created a multidisciplinary peritoneal surface malignancy programme incorporating enhanced-recovery surgical protocols, translational research and clinical trials. His surgical skills include robotic and laparoscopic cancer surgery for gastrointestinal cancers and peritoneal mesothelioma, as well as complex extended resection of advanced soft-tissue sarcomas. Dr. Grotz earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology magna cum laude from Saint John’s University and his medical degree at Creighton University School of Medicine. He completed residency at Mayo Clinic and fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and holds a master’s degree in Clinical and Translational Science from the Mayo Graduate School, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He serves as a panel member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) subpanel for peritoneal mesothelioma, sits on the scientific advisory board of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, and serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgical Oncology.
